Archaeological Area of Tindari

Archaeological Area of Tindari

The ancient Tyndaris was one of the last Greek colonies in Sicily, founded by the Siracusans in 396 BC, when Roman expansion was already overlooking the Mediterranean. The visit to the excavations is particularly interesting both for the monumental aspect that for many details  that allow you to observe some aspects of the everyday life of the ancient city. Once you cross the walls, crossing the main door, not far from the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Tindari, which houses the famous Byzantine Black Madonna, you get to the Greek Theater, leaning against the side of a hill, looking out towards the sea. Near the theater had to be the Agorà, today disappeared under the most modern construction.
In the theater area there are the remains of a Roman villa and a Thermal spa. A large building, called Gymnasium or Basilica, was supposed to serve as a meeting room during the imperial era. Alongside the cave of the theater, the Archaeological Museum exhibits in addition to statues and vases of the Greek era, a colossal head of Augustus and prehistoric materials.
