Sicily Sacra Network. The Project
There are customs and habits that transcend the dimension of time. Traditions capable of engaging and transporting into a different world, full of charm and suggestion, between devotion and theatre. The presence of important shrines and the strong culture of religion, still alive and widespread, make Sicily a privileged destination for religious tourism. In order to facilitate the encounter of the traveller and the pilgrim with these material and immaterial heritages, you can follow the paths of “Sicily Sacra Network – Religious and Cultural Routes“.
By means of a project supported by the Assessorato Turismo of the Sicilian Region, in order to promote and realize tourist itineraries consecrated to the cultural and religious segment in Sicily, a series of proposals have been coordinated in different territories of Sicily. In doing so, it is possible to contribute to the valorisation of the historical and religious heritage of different cultures and common values.
It is possible to follow a mapped path, from Erice Holy Mountain to Agrigento, proceeding to the itineraries in the hinterland, developed according to the forms of slow tourism, or to create a custom-made path by choosing from:
- Places of nowadays religiousness and spirituality: Shrines and traditions
- Places of religiousness and spirituality of the ancient Mediterranean civilizations
- The Cammino della Passione (Passion Easter Route), the rituals of Holy Week
Moreover, over a hundred structures have been identified and selected along the routes to provide necessary services of hospitality and other facilities.
Thanks to the portal www.siciliasacra.net, therefore, it is possible to make a journey inside every aspect of religiousness and spirituality in Sicily and to get all the necessary information and discover the different opportunities of fruition. An interactive app created in collaboration with the “Movimento Lento” Network is also available and can be downloaded for free.
Within these innovative multimedia products, the user can view the selected paths and access information about selected hospitality facilities. There are also some hubs that deepen various topics related to religiosity in Sicily from ancient times to the present.
