Aidone (EN) – Morgantina and Aidone Museum

In the heart of the province of Enna, in the territory of Aidone, there is the ancient site of Morgantina, the archaic Greek and Roman city that came to light thanks to excavations begun in 1955, and thanks to much of its urban center revamped tells centuries of its history, starting from prehistory and reaching the Roman-republican era. A series of dwellings are located on the hill of the Citadel, inhabited by the Morgeti, population of Latium origin that in 1000 BC founded the city. Important objects are kept and displayed inside the Museum of Aidone, like the much controversial statue of the Goddess of Morgantina, height of 2.20 meters, and always been enveloped by the mystery for its composition and its meaning. Recently some historians believe that depicts Demetra, goddess of female fertility, particularly venerated in Sicily in the 4th and 5th centuries BC.
