San Biagio Platani – The Easter Arches

Are so-called arches that make special the Easter of San Biagio Platani. These are complex compositions made by the two brotherhoods (madunnara and signurara), of a large number of loaves of bread arranged on shelves and canes enriched with citrus, flowers, dates, rosemary, branches and leaves of laurel spread throughout the country. The breads have a varied morphology: donuts, angels, bells, roosters, doves, crosses, scenes of passion, etc. Part of this unleavened bread to favor its duration is marmuratu, that is coated with white frosting.

The meeting of the vare of Christ and of Our Lady which takes place in the enclosure bounded by the arches: the statue of the risen Christ holds a bunch of ears of corn in his hand and other first fruits such as beans and peas.

The encounter between the arches, however, represents only the culmination of a ceremonial complex.
