Siracusa – Neapolis

On the east coast of Sicily, 65 km south of Catania, extended partly on land and partly on the island of Ortigia, is the city of Syracuse. Founded in 734 BC, in ancient times it was the most important cultural center of the West together with Athens. After being Greek, Syracuse was Roman, Arab, Byzantine, Norman. History, art and archeology of different eras and cultures, but also the light, the sea, the food and a very special geographical position are the ingredients that make this Sicilian city one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Within the Archaeological Park, there are the most important and best preserved remains of Greek and Roman civilizations in the Mediterranean. The Greek theater dates back to the 5th century BC. and it was later expanded to accommodate up to fifteen thousand spectators. Well preserved the Roman amphitheater, elliptical and partially excavated in the rock. Do not miss the altar of Hieron II, where they were made public sacrifices in honor of Zeus; the latomies, large quarries formerly used both as dwellings that as prisons; the Ear of Dionisio, an high and deep cavern equipped with echo effect.
