Giuliana and the Holy Shroud

Giuliana and the Holy Shroud

The first historical document concerning Giuliana dates back to 1185, when King William II the Good gives Juliana’s “farmhouse” to the Church of Monreale. It is then granted to Count Guglielmo Peralta and then becomes the domain of the Luna and Cardona families, following of the Gioeni, of the Colonna and finally of the Rospigliosi Pallavicino’ family, until 1812, when the feudal rule was abolished.

Near the castle there is the monastery of SS. Trinity, with its homonymous church and the Mother Church, rebuilt between 1935 and 1938 in a neo-Gothic style. In the church is preserved a marble baptismal font made by Giulianese Sebastiano Tinnaro and, in a precious reliquary, a flap of the Holy Shroud that is brought to procession during Holy Tuesday.

For some years now, in August, the historical re-enactment of the Marchesato’s birth was represented, with historical parades, flag bearers and many red and blue flags hanging everywhere.
