ANCIENT ROAD “SELINUNTINA”
The main path follows the visible and invisible traces of the Ancient Road “Selinuntina”. It consists of a real highway of the antiquity, built by the Greeks in order to connect the city of Syracuse and its colonies Akrai (today’s Palazzolo Acreide) and Kasmenai and then continue to Gela and Akragas (today’s Agrigento) to Selinunte. In the past, it was the second most important arterial road of ancient southeastern Sicily, after the via Elorina that connected Syracuse to Eloro, near today’s Noto. Through these connection routes, the inhabitants of ancient Hellenic-Siceliot cities devoted themselves to commercial exchanges or move from one place to another for strategic and military reasons. It is a walking route, sometimes crossed by wagons pulled by oxen, whose wheels made ruts that remained perfectly visible.
Starting from Syracuse, the road passed through Akrai and went on to Gela, Agrigento and Heraclea Minoa and then stopped in Selinunte. Later the Romans extended it to Lilibeo, as you can see in the Itinerarium Antonini: a valuable late antiquity geographic map.

Today, it is possible to follow this itinerary with the SS 115, which connects the cities of Trapani and Syracuse discovering today’s and yesterday’s religious places such as the Tophet, the ancient sacred area of Phoenician-Punic period on the island of Mozia, in the lagoon of the Stagnone of Marsala, Castelvetrano and Sciacca, two steps of the Passion Route in Sicily, the ancient Malophorós Sanctuary in Selinunte, the two archeological areas consecrated to the worship of Demeter in the Valle dei Templi and San Calogero Sanctuary in Agrigento, Acropolis archeological area (Molino a Vento) of Gela, Kamarina’s archeological park, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine in Ragusa, Akrai’s archeological area in Palazzolo Acreide, Eloro’s archeological area in Noto, Pantalica Necropolis, Neapolis archeological area and the Santa Lucia Basilica in Syracuse. Therefore, an interesting circuit that connects Sicily’s east and west, showing many forms of sweet and traditional mobility, can turn into a significant motivation to the religious discover and experiential journey.
